First day at the aged care site was very interesting and eye opening. I was lucky enough to have a great mentor who showed me the ropes and allowed me to participate in the daily tasks. I met a few interesting personalities and conversed with residents who used to be nurses “back in the days.”
One of my goals is to figure out how to talk to elderly patients who have trouble hearing. It was quite difficult to maintain a conversation when I was having to raise my voice. I definitely need to find the balance between talking loudly but not sounding like I’m yelling. Also, I noticed that when I had to raise my voice for them to hear me, I wasn’t able to keep it raised for the entire sentence. So I will have to learn to say things in simplified ways so I don’t have a lot of words or long sentences.
